Sony Changes the story on DRM

Microsoft kicks off the show with a look at the new Metal Gear Solid The Phantom Pain. Key elements: return of Snake. Open World sandbox gaming. It seems Assassin’s Creed series will have some serious competition

Xbox 360 is being revamped to match Xbox one with 3 new xbox 360, not Xbox One, World of Tanks, Max the curse of Brotherhood, and Darksouls 2. It seems the 360 is not going anywhere soon.

Xbox 360 gets another redesign, is available today

While all eyes are on Xbox One news at Microsoft’s E3 keynote, the company’s just announced that the Xbox 360 is getting yet another design iteration. Taking cues from the “modern look and feel of the Xbox One,” it’s touted as smaller, sleeker and quieter. Microsoft did a good job keeping this quiet, as it’s available today. “Hundred of new games” are apparently headed to the 360 over the next couple of years, proving the old console’s still got some life in it yet. We’re in the dark on the price of the new model, but we’ll let you know more as soon as we do.

RYSE: Son of Rome

A Roman action RPG

Killer Instinct is on the way from Microsoft’s Rare studio. The update to the classic arcade/SNES/N64 fighter will be released exclusively on Xbox One. A brief video revealed returning fighters and teased a 2013 release.

Sunset Overdrive is a “stylized open-world shooter” from Insomniac Games, exclusive to Xbox One. Insomniac CEO Ted Price announced Sunset Overdrive during Microsoft’s E3 press conference.Insomniac showed off a trailer, which featured a man running through – and parkouring around – a city infested with zombie-esque, bipedal creatures. The protagonist used a slew of interesting weapons, including a gun that shoots vinyl records and one that runs on energy drinks.

A living game

Forza 5

.Forza Motorsport 5 will include a “Drivatar” cloud-based feature, as announced at Microsoft’s E3 press briefing today. A player’s Drivatar is a personal profile that races while players are away, accruing points for players that aren’t actually playing the game at the time.

The game was initially announced at Microsoft’s Xbox One reveal event in May as a launch title for the system. Good reason to connect to live daily.

Quantum Break:

Xbox one will follow along with the Sci fi Show Defiance. Quantum Break will be a game based off tv show. However you decisions in game will alter the story creating a story around you.

Project Spark

Microsoft announced the user content-driven adventure game Project Spark at its E3 2013 conference today.

Players can use Smartglass and Kinect to define in-game features and items. User-generated content can be shared with the community, and players can remix and build on prior creations in order to customize their own worlds.

From the show so far, I think Microsoft has redeemed themselves.

Capcom announced Dead Rising 3 at Microsoft’s E3 press conference. It’ll launch this holiday as an Xbox One exclusive. Nick Ramos is the new protagonist trying to endure another massive zombie outbreak. Combined with Smartglass looking good

CD Projekt Red reveals The Witcher 3 for Xbox One

CD Projekt Red revealed that its open-world RPG The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is coming to the Xbox One.

The Xbox One version of The Witcher 3 is bolstered by unique hardware-driven features. Kinect voice commands for allow quick weapon-switching and magic, and players can use SmartGlass to customize characters and manage their inventory during gameplay.

The One is looking nice right now but with a $499 launch price has Microsoft priced them outside the gamer’s pocket? Comment below let me know what you think below!!!!!

This Week June 2-8

With the Electronics Entertainment Expo, affectionately know as E3, starting up Monday June 10, the web has been flood with new Xbox One Intel, game teasers trailers, and wild unfounded rumors. Here is a rundown of all confirmed info and a look forward at the E3 schedule.

Microsoft Xbox One
Microsoft has finally released detailed Intel on the Xbox One’s always online status, used/sharing games, and Kinect spying. I will let you determine how you feel about it.
Always Online
Microsoft explained the Xbox One is design to run in a constant low powered connected state. Updates are downloaded and installed automatically allowing for instant gaming gratification. You will be apply to play for up to 24 hours before being required to reconnect to the internet. Microsoft added “because every Xbox One owner has a broadband connection, developers can create massive, persistent worlds that evolve even when you’re not playing.” Microsoft is hoping that developers take manage of the cloud system to create fulfilling and growing content.

Used games / Sharing games

Microsoft gave full disclosure on its used game and giving games to friends policies. , Microsoft Studios will enable you to give your games to friends or trade in your Xbox One games at participating retailers. Third party publishers may opt in or out of supporting game resale and may set up business terms or transfer fees with retailers. Microsoft does not receive any compensation as part of this. In addition, third party publishers can enable you to give games to friends.”

“We designed Xbox One so game publishers can enable you to trade in your games at participating retailers. Microsoft does not charge a platform fee to retailers, publishers, or consumers for enabling transfer of these games.”  Xbox One will also allow you to give up to 10 family members access to “log in and play from your shared games library on any Xbox One.” Similar to Xbox 360, “a family member can play your copy of Forza Motorsport at a friend’s house. Only now, they will see not just Forza, but all of your shared games. You can always play your games, and any one of your family members can be playing from your shared library at a given time.” We are still waiting for info on how this shared game system will work exactly.

Kinect Spygate

Microsoft stresses that “you are in control of what Kinect can see and hear. By design, you will determine how responsive and personalized your Xbox One is to you and your family during setup. The system will navigate you through key privacy options, like automatic or manual sign in, privacy settings, and clear notifications about how data is used. When Xbox One is on and you’re simply having a conversation in your living room, your conversation is not being recorded or uploaded.”

Players will also control whether Kinect is on, off or paused. “If you don’t want the Kinect sensor on while playing games or enjoying your entertainment, you can pause Kinect. To turn off your Xbox One, just say ‘Xbox Off.’ When the system is off, it’s only listening for the single voice command — ‘Xbox On,’ and you can even turn that feature off too. Some apps and games may require Kinect functionality to operate, so you’ll need to turn it back on for these experiences. You can play games or enjoy applications that use data, such as videos, photos, facial expressions, heart rate and more, but this data will not leave your Xbox One without your explicit permission.”

The only question left: Will the PS4 follow? And most editors and  developers feel as if it will.

Konami

On June 6, Konami had a pre E3 Conference.

Key points, New Metal Gear Solid, New Castlevania

Square Enix

For all the Final Fantasy Fans, Square Enix has been sending out invitation their event next week, a Q&A with Final Fantasy brand director Shinji Hashimoto.  Given the timing, it could be a chance for us to find out just what the hell happened to Final Fantasy Versus XIII. Or, as some are starting to speculate it’s now called, Final Fantasy XV. Also gameplay for FF XIII 3 Lightning’s Return has been sampled and reviewed. So far its have been likened to a Majora’s Mask. Check out a full review here.

EA LEAK

It seems the new Xbox360/Xbox one exclusive title Titanfall has been liked by Game Informer. Titanfall is being developed by by former Infinity Ward employees at the new Respawn Entertainment.” Respawn will use the Xbox One’s cloud-computing services to make the game run beyond the hardware’s offline capabilities, utilizing the cloud for physics and AI calculations.” Last month, Microsoft touted the system’s optional cloud computing tech as a tool developers could use to make their games run better. Use of the cloud requires a persistent online connection. The Xbox 360 doesn’t support this kind of thing, as far as we know, so that version would lack that enhanced performance.

An EA spokseperson says, “There’s a lot more of Titanfall to be revealed. Tune in to the EA E3 press conference on Monday June 10 at 1pm PDT for the details.”

Developers’ Take on the Xbox One

Developers’ Take on the Xbox One

Developers Respond to Xbox One

The people making games wonder where the games were, too.

by IGN Staff
May 31, 2013

For the gaming crowd, Xbox One debuted to varying degrees of disdain and indifference. But what about those who are actually making the games for Xbox One? What about the box, its guts, and its features excites them, and how did the announcement affect their teams?

IGN spoke with a handful of game developers about the Xbox One. Here’s what they had to say:

Eric Osborne, Senior Writer and Head of Community at Bungie

I’m excited for the next generation of games. Not just the horsepower, but the services both parties [Sony and Microsoft] are building around it. When we went down and looked at what our pillars for Destiny would be — which, by the way, have existed since 2009 — and then looked at their pillars in candid conversations we were having with Sony before their reveal in February, they’re almost like a mirror with each other. Shared stories, building your legend, living worlds that feel alive instead of a disc in a drive, spaces that are fundamentally cooperative. All those things line up so well with next-gen messaging. It was exciting for us to see that something we were building was not only fundamentally next-gen without the hardware, but we sort of became the de facto tip-of-the-spear for next-gen by nature of what we were building. I think that’s a really fun place to be…

David Goldfarb, Director at Overkill on Payday 2

No real standouts except the dog. The dog was my big takeaway.

Let’s see. I heard more marketing buzzwords than I expected to. I heard a lot about the living room and the TV being super important, which seemed weird given this was a game console. Then there was a bunch more marketing talk telling me how great my end-user experience would be. Never again would I need to switch sources. Then I heard I would get to talk to my console to turn it on. Which I’d frankly not do. I do enough embarrassing s*** in the course of the day – talking to my console is one step too far.

Then the games. I thought everything looked over-filtered and CG. Call of Duty was the best of the bunch. No real standouts except the dog. The dog was my big takeaway. I heard nothing about making self-publishing on the platform easier, nothing about the indie or online strategy, nothing about always-on. Also little about why we, the gamers, should not worry about the fact that in the age of iPads and iPhones and mobile everything, where most of us watched their conference not on TV but on phone or laptop, that their strategy seems to run counter to our user/consumption patterns.

But I will still buy one. 🙂

Brian Reynolds, Game Designer (Formerly Zynga)

What kind of console announce only offers bad news for gamers?

I do most of my console gaming on Xbox 360, so I’ve certainly been tuned in to the long-awaited announcement of the next-gen. It’s actually kind of hard to tell from the “announce” so far what the console gaming experience is going to be like – I don’t personally care at all about all the TV stuff, completely uninterested, so I guess I’m still in a holding pattern.

I was a little sad to hear that I won’t be able to play my 360 games on it (and what kind of console announce only offers bad news for gamers?) since that will presumably mean I’ll have to maintain an operational Xbox 360 in parallel. Hopefully my Xbox Live account at least carries over and I’ll have unified Gamer Points and stuff… having to start over at zero would be getting into borderline rage-quit territory for me. 🙂

Denis Dyack, COO of Precursor Games

We are excited about the potential of X1 and look forward to speaking with Microsoft on how Shadow of the Eternals will be made available on their platform.

Laurent Detoc, President of Ubisoft North America

It’s a pinnacle year in the video game industry. Xbox One allows new possibilities for dynamic gameplay like what you’ll find in Watch Dogs. It also goes beyond gaming innovation to attract entertainment enthusiasts and welcome new audiences to grow the industry.

Josh Tsui, President of Robomodo

I’m always pretty stoked on any new console. It’s been 8 years since the last Xbox and it still boggles my mind that it still holds up. Stuff like more horsepower and awesome graphics are expected. What gets me excited is any possible new business model that may come up for independent developers. Right now that’s being held close to the vest but I’m hoping they take Sony’s lead and figure out a proper venue for that.

The new Kinect is going to be really interesting. I think the first Kinect was fun for what it was but it was always the “first pancake”. It worked and all but it’s really the next pancake that is awesome. The stuff I’ve seen so far seems like it’s delivering the promise from a few years back. The hope is that the granularity of control is improved to the point where developers are making games they really want to make with awesome feedback as opposed to altering the controls to work within the limitations. I can see this truly blowing things up.

I am Iron Friday!

8 Bit Iron Man

What's Your Tag?

That man is putting up Friday fun videos… thought we wouldn’t notice but we did. Yes, once again we are powering up our impressive tech for the end of the week. To be perfectly honest, even though it’s been out for a month, I haven’t seen Iron Man 3. I was really let down by the second the movie, I mean I liked seeing Scarlett Johansson beat people up, I liked Tony Stark and Garry Shandling yelling at each other, but alas these facts and my man-crush on Sam Rockwell couldn’t save it. The first film on the other hand, I love. For those of you who don’t recall, let the guys over at CineFix give you a quick run down of Iron Man 1, Mega Man style:

E3 Nintendo

Since Nintendo has already released their new console, Wii U, I kinda overlooked expectations for Nintendo E3 showcase. For the most part Nintendo has forsaken the hard core console in pursuits of children and casual gamers. Unfortunately, this has not translated into success for console sales. In the first two month of release only 57k were sold where the original Wii sold 435k. With such poor sales, almost no one is developing games for the Wii U. In May, EA announced they would be reducing support for the system. Unreal is currently not support development for Wii U games using the Unreal 4 engine.  So what can Nintendo do to capture gamers, encourage development and increase sales?

In my opinion, Nintendo need to look back at what made the Super Nintendo, N64, and GameCube strong consoles. Nintendo can return to competition with Microsoft and Sony by continuing classic games and going after the adult gamer. Nintendo squandered there lead with early console release by not immediately follow it with their best sale IP’s. New Legend of Zelda, Smash Bros and Metroid Prime game should be available at if not soon after.

It would also be nice to see a Star Fox reboot.  Nintendo need to remember it adult gamers. While the Wii U is a family orientated game system, the system needs adult titles. Something parents can enjoy once the little one are gone to bed.  While there are mature and teen rated games available for the Wii U, most of them are lower quality ports of popular Xbox 360 and PS4 game. We need to see a console exclusive Adult IP not a console port.

Until the Wii U can dramatically increase sale, Developers will continue to ignore the system. I wonder how much longer until Nintendo follows in the footstep of Sega.

E3 Conference

With E3 a little over a week away, there is a vast amount of information needing to be released on Sony’s and Microsoft’s next gen consoles. Hopefully all of our question will be answered during each consoles’ showcase. Here is a list of key points both companies need to clarify before they can hope to see their consoles flying off the shelves.

Prices and Bundles

As of now, neither Microsoft nor Sony has released reliable Intel on prices for the Xbox One or PS4 respectively. Back in February, it was leaked the PS4 would be released in 2 tiers, one at $429 USD and the other at $529 USD. The reason for the price difference we can only speculate. For Sony, we need to know will the PlayStation Eye and Move peripheral come standard in the $529 USD system. Honestly, I don’t see it happening. I believe the different between the 2 systems will be a choice of 500 GB and 1 TB HDDs.

As for Microsoft, the Xbox One reveal showed us there will only be one console at release. Although it might be possible for there to be 2 bundles, no contract and contract system. Back in May of 2012, Microsoft released a 4 GB Xbox 360 for $99 USD, the only catch a two year Xbox Live subscription at raised price of $15 USD.  At the time of release, it was thought Microsoft was doing this only to see how it would be received if used on the next gen console. But with many of Xbox’s core gamers upset with the always connected Xbox One, I don’t believe we will see this at launch. Based on past pricing, the Xbox One should undercut the PS4 with a probably Cost of $450 USD.

Used Game DRM

This is one area where both companies, especially Microsoft, need to choose their words very cautiously. At the reveal, Microsoft announced a used game fee and since then their stock has fallen. Last week, according to Polygon.com, there will not be any used game fee and an anti piracy checks system will be used.  After  talking with a few computer architect and software engineers, it seem that since the Xbox One installs games on the system to reduce load times, there is a real fear of hacker being able to spoof disc once the initial install is complete.

The truth about DRM is DRM doesn’t work. A locked door only keeps an honest person honest. If Microsoft or Sony were to institute some used game fee, the home-brew/jailbreak/rooting community would set their eyes on the console world. The Iphone is prime example of what happens when a company tries to lock down a device. So if either company want to spend countless dollar fixing every possible exploit as they appear, go forward with used game fees.

Required Internet Connection

Once again Microsoft needs to choose their words carefully when addressing internet connections. In the excite of showcase the all in one entertainment powerhouse the Xbox One can be, Microsoft failed to the need for a steady internet connection. It seems that in order to keep guide and other infotainment feature accurate and update a daily log on is require. Since the release, it has been leak that the daily log on is able to be bypass. If it is required, Microsoft needs to commit full disclosure as to why. Else we might see another reason for hacking the Xbox One.  Sony pay attention and adjust accordingly.

Subscription Service

I have a love/hate relationship going on with Xbox Live gold membership. I am already paying $9 a month for Netflix and Hulu each and requiring a gold membership to use it on my Xbox that just ridiculous. That the equivalent of joining a gym and then paying extra to use a treadmill. If Xbox One is to be the entertainment powerhouse they are claiming, the Xbox Live Silver membership will need to be spiced up a little. I am just not going to play 10 buck a month for media capabilities.

The PlayStation 4 could offer gamers multiple subscription levels, Sony president of Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida told The Guardian. The executive said that because services and content have become available digitally, Sony is in a position to act like a traditional cable TV company and offer multiple membership tiers.” As more and more services and contents become available digitally, we’ll have more of an option to create attractive packages. So hypothetically we can look at different models–like a cable TV company,” Yoshida said. “We could have gold, silver or platinum levels of membership, something like that. We can do subscription services when we have more content–especially now that we have the Gaikai technology available,” he added. “With one subscription you have access to thousands of games–that’s our dream.”  Ever since the PS3 anonymous hack, paid online service has been a real possibility. I don’t think Sony will be able to maintain their servers without charging some fee.

Final Thought

As it stands, E3 is Sony chance to extend its current lead over Microsoft. As long as Sony doesn’t go retard on it consumers and demos are great, they will remain ahead. Microsoft needs to take the time and mend bridge with it community. Remind gamers why the chose the Xbox to begin with. Full Disclosure, no secrets or surprises. And most importantly show us some game to anticipate.

Don’t Rush To Judgement on Xbox One

Across the web and within my circle of gamers, I have been sensing a lot of hate towards the new Xbox One. As consumer, I understand people’s disappointment and sense of being let down. However, as gamer and aspiring developer, I am excited now more than ever before. The hardware aspect of the Xbox One has the potential to usher in a new era in gaming. I personally believe that new games will only be limited by the developer. So I am going to go through the new Xbox One Hardware as a developer and explain what I think it means for the next generation of gaming.

Kinect 2.0

The all new Kinect sports 1080p 30 fps cameras with a 60 degree larger field view over its predecessor. It now can sustain up to 6 people on screen at once. It is accurate enough to pick up wrinkles in a shirt or the movement of your chest. And let’s not forget it now includes a set of  IR sensors and Heart beat monitor. Just think of the possibilities. Starting with the obvious, sports games, a level of player based interaction can be reached that has never been dreamt of.  When my friends and I get together for a game of Madden or NCAA Football, we play football, not those 5 minute simulation matches. We play 10-15 minute quarters of grueling All Madden grid iron pigskin. I am talking sweaty palms, trash talking, and victory dancing like we actually score a real touchdowns. Back in college it was normal for us to pause a match and play between classes.(I will get back to this point later.) Now imagine the heart monitor being able to sense your excitement or nervousness based on your heart rhythm changes, and that affects your team. EA Sports already includes a nervous feature, where the QB becomes unreliable in pressure situations. Now that feature can be based off the player and not some random statistics and algorithms. We can now live up to EA Sports motto and “Get in the Game”.    That’s not good enough for you, ok. Imagine Call of Duty, Halo and Resident Evil survival mode becoming adrenaline based, with hordes of  tougher and tougher enemies being thrown at you, maxing out your heartbeat.

Cloud Gaming and daily connection

I personally think this feature is blessing waiting to be fully realized. As we grow up and gain responsibilities, we can’t spend the countless hour gaming like we use to. But with cloud based game and Intelligent AI, the Xbox One can make it feel that way again. After graduating, my roommate and I have stretched across the world. With work, time zone differences and everyday life, it’s borderline impossible to set up gaming match. In event that we can, they almost always get cut short due to some unexpected turn of events. With cloud based gaming, gamer friends across the world will be able to requite old friendship. Using Intelligent AI, it will be a possible to simulate the reaction of our friends playing with us even when they are unavailable.

The second reason I like cloud based gaming is because of the community reaction to Mass Effect 3’s ending. If you recall, Mass Effect 3’s original ending completely pissed off its core game community. Petitions were signed and Bioware responded with a cinematic epilogue. Imagine the next generation of player control games. Through the cloud system developers can track the decisions players make and are able to add to the story line based on the path the majority of gamers take. We could see a video game based version of the Current TV series Bar Karma – an online community-developed game where Online users pitch their own ideas for scenes and twists online with a new level every week.

Overall

All and all this system will be made or broken by the developers. Microsoft has created a solid framework and vision for the future. I am sad to say most of us are too closed minded and stuck in the past to see the possibilities. I look forward to E3 before making my final decision about the Xbox One. But if it were to be released tomorrow, I would gladly be standing in line for one.

Let’s see what E3 brings and then pass judgement. Hopefully Microsoft won’t have me eating my words!!
